It seems that they do. So, those of us that agree that creative thinking is a must in nowadays world, include in our daily lesson plans, strategies that combine learning goals with strategies to enhance student’s potential for creativity.

Liliana Sánchez is the Country Exams Manager at the British Council Mexico. She holds an MA in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) fromCanterbury Christ Church University.
Liliana has held teaching, training, management and leadership positions at renowned English language and mainstream education schools in Mexico. She has been a
speaker at several Mextesol, LABCI and IATEFL conferences in Mexico, Latin America and the UK.
She was the Cambridge English exams Regional Team Leader for Mexico and
the Caribbean for 7 years and has been a Speaking Examiner of the MainSuite, Young Learners, and Business exams since the year 2000.
Liliana is an ICELT and Delta trainer and assessor and has worked in ELT for nearly three decades now.
Different educational organisations implement Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) policies in various ways, but a common factor in all is to make processes and functions accessible to everyone. Such is the case of many examinations boards that have excelled at providing equal opportunities to test takers by accommodating for different abilities, or disabilities as some see them.
In this talk we will look at examples collected from real test sessions where an exams centre has collaborated with different examinations boards to remove barriers for test takers with impairments. Examples of this can be seen where a candidate who is hearing impaired and can only partially read lips was provided a service of sign language, or where a reading test is read to a visually impaired candidate by a trained invigilator. These and other examples of inclusive testing approaches will be used to make a case for the use of similar practices in the classroom, especially in exam preparation courses.
One of the 21st Century skills in language teaching is the use of inclusive practices in the classroom. This talk looks to raise teachers’ awareness of the different inclusive approaches already used in testing that can inform or become common classroom practices when working with students with special educational needs (SENs). In addition, some practical tips to implement EDI with a focus on ‘disability’, based on lessons learnt from running test sessions for SENs, will be presented to illustrate the beneficial impact of washback on today’s changing teaching context.

Andrew Starling is Regional English Content and Portfolio Manager for Pearson HispanoAmerica region.
He has over 20 years of experience in the field of English Language Teaching. Andrew started his career with the Instituto Anglo Mexicano de Cultura (now known as The Anglo) where he was a teacher, teacher trainer, and director of two branches .
He then founded, and was the Academic Director of, RYE SCHOOL OF ENGLISH, a British-English language and cultural school and Authorised Centre for Cambridge English exams in the state of Guanajuato, Mexico.
As teacher trainer, Andrew has tutored on the Cambridge Language Assessment ICELT programme and he has also prepared candidates for the Delta Module 1 examination.
Andrew was a Speaking Examiner for Cambridge English exams for around 20 years, and trained teams of examiners in Mexico and Central America.
As a materials writer, Andrew is author of a number of ELT course books.
Language is often viewed in terms of components and presented to learners in an orderly, neat and structured fashion. Items are organised, introduced and analysed progressively from ‘basic’ to ‘advanced’ and language learning is considered to be linear and progressive.
However, language is creative and dynamic, changing and evolving over time and learning a language does not progress in a smooth, linear fashion. Students don’t necessarily learn what is presented, and when describing language ‘basic’ and ‘advanced’ can often be rather relative terms.
We should step outside this tidy, structured ‘box’ and look for ways to address this mismatch.

She teaches English at all levels at the ITC language center. She has a degree in Biology at the Universidad Metropolitana, and She also has a certification as an English teacher TKT. Margarita has been in Education for 17 years and joined the ITC language Center in 2005, she is certified by Icelt (In-service Certificate in English Language Teaching ) Cenni (Certificación Nacional de Nivel de Idioma Ingles) Tecnico Superior en la Enseñanza del Idioma Ingles (Cedula), TESOL Language Ability in Young Adults and Adults. She teaches English at all levels at the ITC language center and ULM, she is as well a Teacher Trainer for the Teacher’s Diploma Course “Especialista en la Enseñanza del Idioma Ingles” program .
The aim of this workshop is to provide the students with some useful techniques to learn English faster.
In the workshop we´ll talk about how by watching films and TV shows students can learn vocabulary and also check pronunciation. SS will watch a movie segment and they will write all the vocabulary they didn´t understand.
The second tip is about Reading. We will explain other strategies they can use while reading.
How to learn new vocabulary is the next tip. We´ll show them what they can do with the new vocabulary and they´ll do a short activity.
Listening, some strategies will be mentioned. If time permitted, they will do an activity.
And finally other tips will be mentioned.

One of the main reasons for low academic performance is due to something we commonly call “laziness” or “lack of interest,” which is denominated procrastination. Procrastination is the putting off or postponing any activity that has importance. We often see procrastination begin since middle school due to the fact that many students are now teenagers and seek independence from parents having to check their assignments. This habit which in most cases is not a good one seems to have more serious consequences in later stages such as young adulthood at university level. Many students admit that they postpone assignments or projects in order of importance because of the high demand of work they receive during the school year. The result of this method often leads to low scores on exams, incomplete homework, or missing projects. Above all is the unsatisfactory sense of completing these tasks only half way or finishing them but not the way they should be done. In life things should be done in a way that they bring you a sense of being. Many often ask “what the meaning of life is?” many students if asked have no idea and part of not knowing is this habit of procrastination. The main cause of procrastination is the lack of motivation. If there is no motivation for the things you are doing it could very well be the equivalent to there being no meaning to the life that you are living. Do you have motivation?
(This talk is intended to bring motivation to students who are in search of that one thing that seems to be missing in their life. )
Japan: Traditions and Symbolism

The contents of the talk will be focused on enxplaining some of the well-known traditions of Japan and some not so well-known, for each instance mentioned in the talk there will the following main sections: A brief explanation of the tradition or custom, then a brief explanation of the symbolism and the meaning behind the tradition itself, and if it applies, a little about the differences or the similarities with our national traditions, in order to create more symptathy to the culture and language. For instance, there will be a brief explanation regarding the tea ceremony, what is it, what is it about and also there will be some explanation regarding the philosophy behind it.
Or the similarities between the Japanese an Mexican celebrations regarding the dead.

Creative Speaking
Luis Enrique Mendoza Holds a degree in Computer Systems engineering and three language certifications (TOEFL IBT, Zertifikat Deutsch and DELF), he studied at Instituto Tecnológico de Celaya and currently is a German and English teacher in the Language Center, he loves languages and cultural diversity, he has published a paper in the “Pistas Educativas” magazine, and had developed several projects, the most relevant in Kolbenschmidt de Mexico, he has organized the IV scientific and technological dissemination forum that took place at the Tecnológico de Celaya.
The objective of this workshop is to use all that students already know in English, squeezing their wide knowledge of vocabulary and adapting it to unusual contexts, so it´s required that students have already knowledge on grammatical structure (from level 4 and up).
Students will develop their creativity, by adapting a story in different contexts, making them, share their life experiences or occurrences, and developing communication, practicing English, without focusing on a specific set or words.
At the end of the workshop students will realize the capacity that they have, and may feel more comfortable speaking the language out of English class.
Der Terror
Actualmente me desempeño como maestro de alemán en la escuela de idiomas del Instituto Tecnológico de Celaya.
Licenciado en Historia por la Universidad de Guanajuato, enfocado en la historia social y militar, con miras especificas a los siglos XVI y XVII en el entorno europeo y americano.
Un concepto como terror puede variar en el tiempo, así como en los idiomas.
Por esta presentación hará un breve repaso a esta definición por tres idiomas, el español, inglés y alemán permitiendo con ello ver las distintas definiciones y percepciones que se tienen en estos tres lenguajes.
Teniendo en claro esto se dará un recorrido por hechos y personajes que dejaron una huella terrorífica en el imaginario popular. Un ejemplo sería la mítica figura de uno de los asesinos más famosos de la historia Jack the Ripper. En alemán tendremos la participación del Martillo de las brujas obra de origen alemán que marco el combate a las brujas y finalmente en español tendremos la participación de algunos documentos inquisitoriales de piratas que cayeron en manos españolas.
De esta manera y con la utilización de material documental propio de la época se conocerá los hechos de algunos personajes, pero aún más importante se hará patente no solo la evolución de los tres idiomas ya mencionados, sino que se remarcara la importancia que tiene el aprendizaje de un idioma en todas las disciplinas ya sea en humanidades o en ciencias exactas.
Esta platica se llevará acabo en español, pero las actividades involucraran el conocimiento de inglés y alemán de los asistentes.
Comedy Resources for Laughing Out Loud
Most of the time when people start learning a new language, they feel awkward since they do not know each other, as any other first encounter with one’s language native speaker, this stops when they start identifying similitudes among each other and it goes better when laughs come to serve the final dish. Comedy is one of the best doors to match with another human being, and how do we learn about being outgoing and hilarious? From media! Of course.

In this workshop students will debate about the main topic that is “Mental disorders vs. Facebook”.
I will be the moderator and the Judge; while students will be part of a team, either the prosecutor´s team or the defendant´s team. I will give both teams all the background information about the case and they will have 15 min. to read it and present their opening statement which must describe what they tend to prove.
After this The Judge will give each team turns to defend their case allowing herself to give opinions between each participation (to moderate the debate). (20 min)
Finally The Judge will give 5 min to the defendants team to analyze whether they want to declare themselves guilty or innocent after all the information that was given. At the same time the prosecutor´s team will be writing their final statements for both cases whether the defendant´s team declares guilty or innocent. After the declaration the prosecutor´s team reads its final statement and The Judge gives her verdict.
The American Academy of Pediatrics has warned about the potential for negative effects of social media in young kids and teens, including cyber-bullying and "Facebook depression." This is a very interesting topic for students to debate, since they are actually living in this media world but at the same time they do have a critical thinking and they are so eager to express their opinions.
The goals of this activity are to allow students to express themselves freely about a topic they are aware of and also they will practice writing and oral skills since all the students most participate, and as an extra benefit the will learn court and trial vocabulary.
They will certainly have fun getting involved in such an interesting topic for them.

Improving my English with Music & Cartoons
I have a BA in ELT (English Language Teaching) from the University of Guanajuato, I´ve been teaching English for 7 years in different levels from preschool to University.
At this time I´m teaching English in a company then, in an elementary school (1st and 6th grade) and in this school I´m in charge of the teachers too.

The Basics of Pronunciation and Practice
I studied at the Universidad de Guanajuato the B.A in Enseñanza del Inglés. I attended several other teacher- training courses over 15 years of teaching practice. I am currently working at the UPJR (Universidad Politécnica de Juventino Rosas), the Tecnológico de Celaya Institute language departments.
Besides, I worked for over 10 years at the Universidad de Celaya, and several companies such as Avon, Mabe, Capistrano, and Deacero.
I carried out a research about the importance of Teacher-training, as well as teacher development.
All in all, I am interested in anything related to teaching and learning practice.
During the teaching and learning process of a foreign language; there is often the natural need to improve our learner’s pronunciation. Therefore, they would gain confidence when performing in the foreign language in which they need to communicate. This workshop focuses on ways to better the learner’s pronunciation and how to put that into practice. We will get familiar with the Phonetic Chart and other related aspects of pronunciation in this session.
Wacky History - Rally and Rap Your Way Through The Centuries
A native speaker, born and raised in the USA, is one of the founding members of Centro de Idiomas, and has been an English instructor and teacher trainer at ITC-CIIT for the past 33 years.
Has been teaching for more than 35 years at all levels and with all group types. Holds ICELT and CELE-UNAM teacher certifications, is a TOEFL applier and has held a Cambridge Vigilator Certification at CAE level.
Being bi-lingual and bi-cultural, Trans-Culturalization as well as the History of Language Development have been two areas of personal interest that evolved during studies taken in the area of cultural anthropology under National Science Foundation auspicious in her hometown of Chicago, and later at UDLAP in the early 1970´s.
An area that needs change most in our modern and technological lives is the consciousness that we, as a culture, are not lone-standing, but a conglomerate of events and stimuli linked to a specific geographical site through the ages, distilled into what are now our present societies, each also being a conglomerate of events and stimuli linked to different geographical places on the earth, and all challenged by our environment, presenting a need to interact with each other.
Through this talk we will see how the English language of today has been influenced by other languages and cultures in the past and present, with the audience becoming part of this somewhat irreverent presentation through their own interpretations and contributions that embody the various ages of the development of the language.
5 Factors to Help You Improve Your Process of Learning
Computer systems engineer, graduated from the Instituto Tecnológico de Celaya, specialized in emerging technologies for decision-making. Aurora Ramírez worked at the information technologies department giving technical support and also developing web applications for different companies such as Red Cross Celaya, GNVTECH and Alcamare Recycling Group. Aurora is currently working at the ITC’s Language Center teaching English for teenagers.
Learning a new language is a challenge that many students may find hard to overcome and even more when they do not have set a goal or even when they do not have the motivation needed to learn and retain information. However, there are different factors that may help them during their process of learning and therefore put them into practice, these factors are: motivation, set a goal, ignore the myths, practice everyday and get to know your strengths. Factors shown will give students an idea of how they can improve their learning which can be formed into habits through a bit of discipline and self-awareness.

Cualquiera que sea el idioma a aprender implicará tiempo y dedicación, en ocasiones el idioma alemán es evadido por considerarse un idioma difícil, la realidad es que así como lo aprendieron los alemanes, como lengua madre, lo puede aprender cualquier persona. En esta ocasión explicaré dos puntos importantes que me permitieron aprender alemán, escuchar y repetir, siendo consciente de la gramática. Cuando un niño, menor a tres años, aprender un idioma es importante que primero lo haya escuchado de esta manera identificará las palabras y su significado sin haber aprendido a escribir y mucho menos la gramática. Por ello un primer paso para aprender alemán es escuchar todo lo que sea posible, música, noticias, películas, etc. A la par puede uno estudiar la gramática, para así identificar cualquiera de las cuatro declinaciones, según las preposiciones y los verbos.
Un segundo paso es repetir todo lo que se escuche o lea, repetirlo por oraciones; verificando así que dichas oraciones gramaticalmente sea correcto, como sabemos pensar en la gramática mientras hablamos es muy complicado, puesto que implicaría declinar a la velocidad a la que hablamos. Aprender oraciones completas es justo como todas las personas aprenden su lengua madre.
Por medio de algunos audios, los chicos escucharan frases, primeramente identificaran la pronunciación y después las repetirán en parejas. Demostrando así que sin importar la complejidad de la oración los chicos pueden aprender frases desde muy fáciles hasta las muy complejas.

Language and Thought
Andrea Rojas is a B.A. in TEFL student at UG. She has worked has an English teacher at ITC since 2016. She has participated in different congresses including MEXTESOL.
It is widely believed that all humans regardless of their language have a shared knowledge of the world. But is this true? Do all humans think in the same way about the things surrounding no matter what language they speak? Or does language shape the way we think?
This workshop is designed to raise discussion and create consciousness on the linkage between the languages we speak and the way we think.
The psychology of film and television language
English Teacher at Instituto Tecnologico de Celaya, Educational Psychology Major from Universidad Pedagogica Nacional, 8 years of experience as an English teacher in all levels from Elementary school to College level students and training for company workers in the region.
This is a talk related to the psychology behind the different ways that the movie and television industry use to reach their audience and how the cinematic language is able to convey a message by using visual and auditory cues. It is also an opportunity to understand why certain pieces of media are appealing to the masses and how a movie or a TV show can transcend the barriers of spoken language.

The outgoing global entrepreneur area is focused on empowering young people to take an internship abroad in a startup company.
We show them the benefits of taking the internship abroad, all these benefits will be reflected on their CV´s in personal and professional matters, It will be reflected on their own person because they will learn about a new culture.
We tell them about all the processes that have to be covered in order to take the internship abroad, we also advise them on any doubts they may have.
We also mention the documents required for the internship, and make sure it´s an awesome experience for young people.

Self-Motivation: The Key to Language Learning
Santa Anahí Preciado Ríos, bachelor in Touristic Administration, holds a CENNI diploma, a TKT certificate, an IELTS certificate and two DELF certifications for French. nine years of experience as an EFL teacher. She works as an English professor in the Language Center in the Centro de Investigación e Inovación Tecnológica at the Instituto Tecnológico de Celaya, where she has worked for seven years. She also teaches French as a Foreign Language in this institution. She is currently working in five other institutions, at secondary school, high school and university levels. She has also taught TOEFL and DELF preparation courses. She is currently working and supporting Colegio Marista as the Language Coordinator. This is the second participation in the Academic Friday.
What is YOUR reason for studying a foreign language? Is it academic, social, tavel-related, work-related?
No matter what the reason is, sometimes students take language courses because they have to, not because they want to. That is why self-motivation takes an enormous part in language learning because, the more motivated students are, the better is their learning process, and at the end, learning a foreign language will be an enjoyable experience for them. And what’s more, the motivation that comes from within, is the one that helps accomplish one’s goals for Language Learning.
In this talk we will analyze some encouragement and motivational techniques to help students see their learning experience in a more exciting and interesting way, and help them become aware of the self-motivation and its importance.

Breed or stray animals?
She has been working as an English teacher for 19 years; Currently working in “Instituto Cumbres Celaya” and also at the Language Center in the “Instituto Tecnológico de Celaya”; She has been fighting for about 6 years for both animal and human rights so that there be justice for all.
The idea is to raise awareness about adopting animals instead of buying them, to show the importance of sterilizing and saving their lives. Taking care of our pets is a great responsibility as well as providing them the opportunity for a better life. Also to give an idea on how the life of a breed dog is and how they can change the life of a stray.
I want to involve the participants in the workshop to give them ideas on how they could create a campaign or how they could persuade people to adopt and sterilize animals, as well as doing a community service preventing contagious diseases and more animals being out on the streets. The material produced in this workshop will be shared around the University and if possible in other schools.

Andrew Starling
Andrew Starling is Regional English Content and Portfolio Manager for Pearson HispanoAmerica region.
He has over 20 years of experience in the field of English Language Teaching. Andrew started his career with the Instituto Anglo Mexicano de Cultura (now known as The Anglo) where he was a teacher, teacher trainer, and director of two branches .
He then founded, and was the Academic Director of, RYE SCHOOL OF ENGLISH, a British-English language and cultural school and Authorised Centre for Cambridge English exams in the state of Guanajuato, Mexico.
As teacher trainer, Andrew has tutored on the Cambridge Language Assessment ICELT programme and he has also prepared candidates for the Delta Module 1 examination.
Andrew was a Speaking Examiner for Cambridge English exams for around 20 years, and trained teams of examiners in Mexico and Central America.
As a materials writer, Andrew is author of a number of ELT course books.

Liliana Sánchez is the Country Exams Manager at the British Council Mexico. She holds an MA in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) fromCanterbury Christ Church University.
Liliana has held teaching, training, management and leadership positions at renowned English language and mainstream education schools in Mexico. She has been a
speaker at several Mextesol, LABCI and IATEFL conferences in Mexico, Latin America and the UK.

the Caribbean for 7 years and has been a Speaking Examiner of the MainSuite, Young Learners, and Business exams since the year 2000.

Sanjuana Aurora Ramirez Alvarez
Computer systems engineer, graduated from the Instituto Tecnológico de Celaya, specialized in emerging technologies for decision-making. Aurora Ramírez worked at the information technologies department giving technical support and also developing web applications for different companies such as Red Cross Celaya, GNVTECH and Alcamare Recycling Group. Aurora is currently working at the ITC’s Language Center teaching English for teenagers.
Lourdes Jasso Montoya
Lourdes Jasso holds a Master Degree in Teaching and a Bachelor’s Degree in Business, she holds the ICETL´s Certification from Cambridge University and TESFL from Algonquin College. She is the Associate Degree Business Coordinator at the Bilingual University Laja Bajio. She has been working as an English teacher since 1987 in different places like Instituto Celayense, Universidad Lasallista Benavente, Normal Justo Sierra, Colegio New England, Instituto Tecnologico de Celaya and Universidad Tecnologica Laja Bajío. She has participated in the program of International Mobility for teachers in Canada. She was at the Algonquin College in Ottawa, working with international students from Asia, Europe and Latin America. She is in an International Investigation Program with the RELAYN organization. I am currently working at the UPJR (Universidad Politécnica de Juventino Rosas), the Tecnológico de Celaya Institute language departments.
Besides, I worked for over 10 years at the Universidad de Celaya, and several companies such as Avon, Mabe, Capistrano, and Deacero.
I carried out a research about the importance of Teacher-training, as well as teacher development.
